Seekers Glass Gallery presents glass sculpture
by Caleb Nichols. His original works of art exhibit the unique, natural
properties of glass: fluidity, optical brilliance, reflection, refraction and
the interplay of light and color.
Nichols creates a series of sculptural pieces.
Some consist of several sections that can be hung on a wall in a variety of
configurations. Others are combinations of cast and blown elements, sometimes
illuminated from within.
His art is inspired by a childhood spent in a
remote, natural setting near the sea. "As a boy, I enjoyed rowing out on a
gusty day to bounce about in the waves."

"There are whitecaps everywhere. Aside
from the sloshing and slapping of water against the boat, it is very quiet and
peaceful. The rowboat rides up each wave, takes in the view, and slides down the
other side surrounded by froth and foam. The sea is in constant motions, and its
vastness and power fascinate and humble me. This, then, is the starting point for my
art: a personal connection with the sea difficult to describe but universal to
anyone familiar with the ocean. It is my hope that the work may transport the
viewer, if only for an instant, to an offshore memory of their own."
Nichols earned an AA degree in Art from
Franklin College, Lugano, Switzerland, and his BA degree in Studio Arts from
Tulane University, New Orleans, where he studied under glass sculptor Gene Koss.
He completed postgraduate studies in Glass at
the Appalachian Center for Crafts, where he studied under William Carlson, at
Southern Connecticut State College and the Massachusetts College of Art. He has
worked as an independent glass artist since 1985.
His work is included in numerous public and
private collections, including The Peabody and Brockton Museums, both in
Massachusetts, and The White House. His work has been shown at major galleries,
museums and juried exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe.
