Seekers Glass Gallery presents the work of
David New-Small, who creates perfume vials that are an ode to love.
He uses rare dichroic glass, which changes
colors when viewed from different angles, symbolizing the ever-changing nature
of love.
His Love Songs series of perfume vials depict
engraved faces of lovers in an embrace. For this series, he collaborates with
artist Dyan Vidulich who creates the engraved images of the lovers. If you look
closely, you can usually see the image reflected in the stopper shaft.
His Peacock series displays the iridescent
feathers of one of natures most beautiful and romantic birds.
New-Small is one of the few glass artists who
are able to create glass with the rare and very difficult to work with dichroic
glass.
The word dichroic is Greek — di means two
and chroic means color. Dichroic glass was developed in the 1960s for use in
high technology applications. It manipulates light in two ways, transmitting one
color while reflecting another. It appears to change colors when the viewer
moves in relation to the piece, providing a kinetic effect.
Corporate collections in which his work is
represented include First City Capital; Suncor corporation; Canarim Investment
Corporation Ltd.; Loewen Ondaatje McCutcheon & Co. Ltd., Imperial Oil; and
Delta Hotels.
New-Small earned his bachelor’s degree from
the University of California, Berkeley and subsequently studied for several
years at the world renowned Pilchuck Glass School. He established his own
studio, New-Small & Sterling Studio Glass in 1983.
His work is included in many permanent collections, including
those of the Corning Museum of Glass; the Canadian Craft Museum; the Government
of the Philippines; the Government of China; the Government of Canada; the City
of Vancouver.
