Seekers presents the work of Dimitri
Michaelides, a world renowned American glass artist best known for his brightly
colored sculptural vessels adorned with handblown glass birds.
His current series of sculptural Bird Vessels
are distinguished by classic Grecian-inspired forms executed in bold primary and
secondary colors, and topped by his signature birds.
He carries his classical theme forward with
his Athenian Bud Vase series of brightly colored functional vessels.
Michaelides studied at the New York State
College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Rhode Island School of Design and
earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
Among the many awards he has received are
American Craft Museum, Young Americans Merit Award; a National Endowment for the
Arts (NEA) Visual Artists Fellowship Grant; and the Creative Glass Center of
America, Masterworks Fellowship.
He has taught or lectured about glass at
California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland; Pilchuck Glass School, WA, where
he has also served as Master Craftsman in Residence for three years; Penland
School of Crafts, NC; Visiting Artist, Ohio State University; and Haystack Mt.
School of Crafts, ME.
Recently, Michaelides was one of 72 artists
selected by The Smithsonian for inclusion in the permanent White House
Collection of American Crafts. His work is pictured in the official book
documenting the collection.
Exhibitions of his work have occurred at the
Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Northwest Museum of Modern Art, WA; Museum of
Fine arts, Springfield, MA; Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester, NY;
Tampa Museum of Art, FL; Anchorage Museum of Art, AK; Jacksonville Art; Hunter
Museum, TN; American Craft Museum, NY; and the National Museum of American Art,
Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
