Seekers Glass Gallery presents the work of
Raymond D. Mathews, whose original designs include Glass Headed Golf Putters
sanctioned by the USGA.
A well known glass artist for more than two
decades, Mathews has created a unique, signed and dated piece of art glass that
is a fully functional golf putter.
The handmade glass head of this patent pending
design is face-balanced with a 5 degree loft and fitted with a True Temper 90
degree double bent shaft. Left handed putters available upon request. Each
putter comes with a protective cover.
Mathews’ inspiration for the glass putter
came from playing golf with his father, a former professional athlete.
"On the phone one night, my father asked
when I was coming down to play some golf. I told him I had too much glass work
to do and didn’t know when I could get away."
My father said, "Too bad you couldn’t
make golf clubs out of glass."
"I got off the phone and thought, ‘Why
not?’ so I designed and made a putter for him.
"My father, Ray Mathews Sr., played for
the Pittsburgh Steelers (#25) in the 1950’s. He plays in a lot of celebrity
golf tournaments using his glass putter. A country club pro saw it, tried it,
and liked it. He told my father I should patent and manufacture it. I did! It
brings me great satisfaction to blend my dedication to my artwork and my love
for the game of golf."
Mathews earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
Art Education and Glassblowing from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU),
where he now serves as an instructor of glassblowing. In 1975 he established his
own studio, Bittersweet Glassworks, in rural Connecticut.
Each piece is dated, signed with the studio name, Bittersweet.
Mathews’ work has been exhibited throughout the United States and
internationally, and is included in numerous collections.
