Seekers® presents the work of Kevin Fulton, whose
original designs in handblown glass include fish, shells, vases and life size
sculptural busts.
His Female Form series ranges from head
studies, sometimes as a vessel, and full size busts each of which portrays the
artist’s interpretation of a particular fashion, art or ethnic theme.
Fulton creates the busts as constructions of
two or three blown glass elements. He achieves distinctive facial images by
blowing the glass into a bronze mold, then manipulating it further so that no
two faces are alike. Because he continues to reheat and blow the head portion
after removing it from the mold, each work assumes its own unique facial
characteristics.
He gives some faces an abstract appearance by
randomly placing what he calls "topographical lines" within a thick
layer of clear crystal. He achieves other unusual visual effects by etching or
fuming portions of the figure to create a frosted or iridescent appearance. The
shoulder-neck portion of each bust is freeblown, as are the hats that adorn some
busts. When the elements are completed, Fulton joins them with a flexible
silicon bond and mounts the bust onto a beveled glass base.
His Aquatic Series, which includes fish,
shells and undersea creatures, is executed freehand making each one unique. A
subtle surface iridescence conveys the ethereal beauty that is found in sea
creatures.
Fulton earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
from Central Washington University after studies in Glass and Art at New Mexico
Technical/Vocational Institute and the University of New Mexico. He has pursued
graduate studies in glass sculpture at the Pratt Fine Art Institute, Seattle,
where he occasionally conducts workshops.
His works have been shown at major galleries
and museums throughout the United States, including the Pope Joy Art Museum,
Albuquerque and the Portland Art Museum.
