Seekers presents the work of Rina Fehrensen, who creates original
vase designs that combine classic forms with bold, contemporary color
combinations.
With her beautiful Rose Garden Series, Fehrensen bisects the
classically shaped vessel into two fields of richly colored glass chips all
twinkling like rough cut gemstones. She uses emerald like greens on the lower
half, pink and rose on the upper half.
She also creates a Spectrum series of multicolored pieces that
include handblown fish, eggs and paperweights.
In 1997, Fehrensen and partner Michael Maddy established their
own glass studio, Mad Art Studios, in southern California. She creates the
studio’s glass vases; he specializes in glass paperweights and raku ceramics.
Each of Fehrensen’s vases is signed with the studio name and dated.
A native Californian with family roots in Germany, Fehrensen
has always had a strong interest in art. She studied art at San Diego’s Mesa
College, the University of Madrid and the Institute De Benin in Africa prior to
earning a bachelor of arts degree in visual arts from the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD), where she was on the graduate honor’s list.
Since 1990 she has continued to pursue studies in glassblowing
at Palomar College, CA; the Pilchuck Glass School, WA, where she studied with
Bob Carlson; and the Haystack School of Crafts, ME, where she studied with
internationally renowned glass artists Lino Tagliapietra and Dante Marioni.
Her awards include the Palomar College Glass Studies Award, 1996; Southern
California Glass Association Exhibition, First Prize Award, 1995; and the UCSD
Undergraduate Arts Festival, Visual Arts Grant, 1987. She has exhibited her work
at Palomar College, UCSD, the Oceanside Museum of Art and national juried shows.
