| Seekers Glass Gallery
presents the work of Kevin Kutch and Mary Ellen Buxton, whose
collaborative pieces of sculptured glass offer fascinating visual
effects.
In creating their collaborative pieces, they use
glassblowing to explore form and function and their fascination with
light and color. Their creations include limited edition and one of a
kind pieces that range from functional perfume vials, some with
elaborate cut and polished facets, to larger sculptural vessels.
"Glass in itself is a liquid and an excellent
medium for this type of exploration," Mary Ellen explains.
"Using
deceptively simple designs, we create sculptural objects that
manipulate light through the optical and refractive qualities of the
glass.
Combining the clarity of clear and transparent
colored glass with the cold working techniques of cutting and
polishing, we invite the viewer to experience this liquid medium of
light and motion."
Mary Ellen studied at Brooklyn College, University
of Tennessee, University of Colorado, University of Denver and
Colorado State University prior to receiving her bachelor’s degree
in Fine Arts from Metropolitan State College, Denver. She has taught
at the highly regarded Parsons School of Design, NY.
Kevin earned his bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and
Sculpture, as well as his teaching certification, from Metropolitan
State College in Denver. He began working in glass in 1981 and has
worked closely with some of the world’s leading glass artists,
including Dale Chihuly, Richard Marquis, Lino Tagliapietra and Dante
Marioni. He spent a decade as a studio manager for glass artists Kit
Karbler and Michael David prior to becoming Studio Director for the
renowned New York Experimental Glass Workshop (now called Urban
Glass).
The artists have worked together since the mid 1970s
and established their own studio, Pier Glass, in 1994. They welcome
inquiries regarding corporate commissions for one of a kind pieces or
custom engraved awards or gifts.
Their work has been shown at major galleries,
museums and juried exhibitions throughout the United States.
